WebThere is no possible way to supply the 30+ watts that the motor of a 3.5" drive needs for spinup off a regular USB 2/3 port. Including conversion loss and the existing 5V requirements, thats about 8 amps at 5V. USB-C/PD could technically do it, but that requires a PD port on the host computer (just having a USB-C port doesn't mean it supports PD).
