Children may inherit the disease through genes. This is called familial HLH. But in adults, many conditions can cause HLH. This is called acquired HLH. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a severe hyperinflammatory syndrome induced by aberrantly activated macrophages and cytotoxic T cells.
