Phone splitter not working

So I acquired a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter from Cable Matters. I plugged the adapter into my phone and used a short HDMI 2.0 able to plug the adapter into the monitor. The phone detected it was plugged into a display, but the monitor stayed black.
