For steel threads I use an aerosol thread cutting spray & for brass & alu I use WD 40 as the lubricant .

The method that I use is to leave the tailstock loose enough so it just slides on the bed ways. Then just start the spindle, slide the die up to it, and let the threading action pull the tailstock along the ways.
